How To Recover From The Effect Of The Broad Core Algorithm Update

It has been a couple of months since Google rolled out its broad core algorithm update in May. Many sites have ranked higher while some have to come down. Many of the webmasters were predicting the reason being the latest updates in the “Broad Core Algorithm”. And it was later confirmed by Google too that they have changed the ranking and appearances of some sites in the search engine results page.

Elaborating more, Google said that the Broad Core Algorithm is updated several times per year and you can’t do anything about it. There are some sites that are ranked up as they were under-rewarded earlier.

Here is what announced by Google:

Each day, Google usually releases one or more changes designed to improve our results. Some are focused around specific improvements. Some are broad changes. Last week, we released a broad core algorithm update. We do these routinely several times per year….

As with any update, some sites may note drops or gains. There’s nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well. Instead, it’s that changes to our systems are benefiting pages that were previously under-rewarded.

There’s no “fix” for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages.”

One of the news publishing websites reverted back on Google’s decision and wrote,

“We’re a news publisher website that’s primarily focusing on the business finance vertical. We probably have been impacted by the June Core Update as we’ve seen a traffic drop from the 1st week of June.”

It takes almost 2 weeks to know the effect of the broad core algorithm but SEMrush released the SERP volatility after 2 days of the updates, here is what they displayed in the report:

SERP volatility

It is evident from the graph that there is a gigantic impact in May after the Broad Core Algorithm and the most hit sector is health, finance, health and retail. This is due to the backdrop of COVID-19 where search queries are low and these sites experience low traffic. On the other hand, news publishers have experienced huge traffic for covering updates of the pandemic.

A well-balanced reason was given by Google’s own John Muller.

“There’s nothing to fix since there’s no specific thing that the algorithm targets. A variety of factors that relate to a website sometimes evolves, and that affects your traffic and rankings. There are no explicit changes you can do, but there is an old blog post (published 2011) on the Webmaster Central Blog that’s basically a guide on building high-quality sites and he highly recommends that webmasters read this post.”

The point is that even many of the large sites lost their rankings but it is not a permanent situation. The rankings fluctuate after every new update in the Broad Core Algorithm. It is also said that if your site ranks lower after any update then you can regain the higher rank in the next update. You just have to understand the criteria and handle the process well.

Just follow some of the instructions and worry less for the changes after Google’s next update.

1. Need to understand what ranks your site better

The first and important step is to face the real picture of your site. John Muller put up a group of questions that will help you understand why your site should rank better than the other competitors:

Is the content available in the site written by some expert or enthusiast or it is somewhat shallow in nature? If given an option, would you be able to give the credit card information to the site?Do you trust the content available on the site?Does the site have redundant content and copied articles with little changes in the keyword? Is there any spelling or factual errors?Does the content is formed keeping the reader’s interest in the mind or just an attempt to rank well in search engines?

If the majority of your answers are positive, then you might think of high ranking in the future but if not, then improvements can only save you. So, be positive and put up your belt to shine in front of the google robots.

2. Use Google’s own tools

You may have done your best to put together all the necessary efforts to make your site a win to go in position but was not satisfied with its final performance. So, to know where the site actually lacks in the mind of the readers, you should try some of the best Google’s tools which not only provide accurate but effective results. Take a glance at some of them:

Search Console

Search Console will tell you where the click is dropped to specific landing pages. You can also compare the traffic between the two specific dates and get valuable data for improvement. There are also many filter options available in the search console such as searching the performance in any particular country or any specific device.

Analytics

Another effective tool that lets you dig the real condition of your website is analytics. To get the information of organic traffic, just click behavior > site content > landing pages and then filter “Organic traffic”. It has many other filters too that lets you get the information of real time users and source it is coming from.

3. Improve site’s EAT

To improve the site’s ranking, you easily can rely on EAT which stands for Expertise, Authority, and Trust. It is a concept that looks after the overall quality of your site including the great content and backlinks. Sometimes, it is misinterpreted with the concept of measuring scores for the site but it measures whether you are an expert in the field and provides relevant information to the readers.

So, here are some handy points you should remember for improving EAT:

Give ample time to personal branding by building and updating About Us pageBe active on social media platformsProvide quality backlinks rather than the quantityRemove poor quality content from your website

4. Seek other’s opinion too

Yes, as the owner of the website and building up things from top to bottom, it is very common to appreciate your site as you have implemented your perspective there. But if you ask the opinion of the people from the same field, you will be amazed to look at their different perspectives. Sometimes, it may sound weird to you but sometimes, it will actually work for your side.

Approach the expert and well-wishers and ask them if they look satisfied with the overall look including the content, design, and functioning of your site. The different reviews can be later on analyzed and improved for the betterment of your sites and ultimately benefits you.

Conclusion:

There is not a single rule to recover from the updates of the Broad Core Algorithm. You have to take care of the whole site rather than thinking that there is a single factor affecting the ranking of your site. something, we blame the poor-quality content for the lower ranking while technical issues can also be considered as another factor but having an open mind and looking at overall reasons can drop you in a successful position.
