ROBINHOOD ISSUE:
Yesterday, on Monday, November 8th…Robinhood revealed that, on the evening of November 3rd…a third party obtained access to a portion of their customers information, including email addresses, names, and other personal details.
As they say: “the unauthorized party obtained a list of email addresses for approximately five million people, and full names for a different group of approximately two million people. We also believe that for a more limited number of people—approximately 310 in total—additional personal information, including name, date of birth, and zip code, was exposed, with a subset of approximately 10 customers having more extensive account details revealed. We are in the process of making appropriate disclosures to affected people.”
First, ALWAYS ENABLE GOOGLE AUTHENTICATOR.
This is a totally free service that randomly generates a 6 digit code every 60 seconds that’s required to login to certain websites.
Second, ALWAYS REQUEST THAT YOUR TELEPHONE PROVIDER REQUIRE PHOTO ID IN PERSON TO CHANGE YOUR SIM card.
Even though this isn’t 100% foolproof…like, in situation.…it’s one more barrier that will cut down on the likelihood that your information is released without your permission.
Third, USE PRIVATE EMAIL ACCOUNTS THAT NO ONE HAS ACCESS TO.
Making an extra email account is totally free and takes you just a few minutes…and from there, you can link your important accounts to various addresses that NO ONE ELSE KNOWS ABOUT.
Fourth, GET A PRE-PAID BURNER PAID PHONE THAT YOU NEVER SHARE WITH ANYONE.
There are PLENTY of businesses out there that don’t ask you for ANY personal details, whatsoever, when getting a new cell phone….meaning, your SIM card and phone number are completely untraceable, and none of your information is in a database.
Fifth, IDEALLY – DO NOT LINK YOUR ACCOUNTS TO YOUR PHONE NUMBER FOR PASSWORD RECOVERY.
Instead, re-direct lost passwords to your BURNER EMAIL ADDRESS – and, if you forget your passwords on THOSE ACCOUNTS – use your BURNER PHONE NUMBER TO RETRIEVE THEM.
Sixth, TRY NOT TO KEEP ALL OF YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET.
I know it’s tempting to have one place that does everything, from your banking, to your investments, to your credit cards, to your cryptocurrency…but, IDEALLY…spread your accounts throughout several services.
And Seventh – FREEZE YOUR CREDIT SCORES, FOR FREE:
This works by PREVENTING any new accounts from opening up in your name, including credit cards, loans, mortgages, or ANYTHING that requires access to your reports.
