While this book was released in 2008, making all the detailed information about creating and managing a YouTube channel out of date, Alan Lastufka and Michael Dean have created a bit of timelessness as well. Some of the more serious advice; what to do, what not to do, how to engage your viewers, how to expand outside of YouTube; remains as solid and poignant as the day it was written. What really makes this a must-read book for any YouTuber is the focus on community and art, which is what made YouTube what it is, even if the site itself seems to continuously make moves away from both in favor of more corporate pursuits (sadly, a side-effect of doing business).

Real Experts, too true

Fellas who have been making videos, sometimes a viral, for many years on Youtube, describe the way a video channel can become successful and popular. Unlike other books that try to tell you what you want to hear, they reveal that it actually takes some real skill and a daunting amount of luck, an element that requires a lot of stick-to-itivness. I imagine the books that promise to reveal “secret shortcuts” may sell better, but they are exaggerating or just plain lying to sell those books. If you want the truth that you can actually work with, this is the book.

This is a good, solid, basic guide to youtube. Ignore the hype behind the book, and there is a lot of it. The book is a simple, great basic guide to youtube with a common sense approach to achieving a lively channel. It’s not going to work a miracle for you. But nothing will.

A fun read with great insights and guides to what it really takes to be successful on this web site. Goes way beyong technical information. Introduces critical concepts to succeed with Web-based productions i.e., the importance of the YT “community” for better or worse. The URL reference list alone is worth the price of the book. Highly reccommend this to all but especially first-timers.

This book is helpful in every way I can think of. Everyone can learn many things from this book if you’re just starting out on YouTube or even if you’ve been involved with it for a while. I got this book after having a YouTube channel and posting videos for a year and it made me completely change and redesign my video posting experience. I started a new channel and made some crucial changes to my content. Now my videos are better than ever, I have a small yet very strong fan base and I have great, positive interaction with those who watch my videos. This book completely transformed my YouTube experience into something more!

Theory is still great. Technique might be outdated a bit. Is there an update coming?

This manual may be a bit outdated on the nuts and bolts side, but the theory is all spot on. Give it a whirl if you’re trying to start a channel for yourself or your business. (Note: I’m doing a graduate thesis on YouTube for business communication.)

Really great book for beginners like me!

Step by step and in layman’s terms. Excellent book. It is a bit dated but one can easily find current programs and equipment. I have posted 2 videos…neither one is up to the bar I have set. But after reading this book, I know where to set the bar and can work to acheive that goal.
